Abstract

Research in Library and Information Science (LIS) education is an integral component of Nigeria's developmental agenda, but it is under-resourced, poorly embedded in policy but rather connected to Nigeria's practical information needs. Based on empirical findings, institutional data and current theoretical approaches, the article argues that the transformative capacity of LIS research to enhance information governance, digital literacy, empowerment of marginalised populations and support knowledge-led economic diversification is being systematically underutilised due to a combination of institutional neglect, lack of funding and professional marginalisation. The article argues that Nigeria's ambition of achieving sustainable development as outlined by Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Nigeria Agenda 2050 will continue to be a dream if deliberate, sustained and strategically targeted investments are not made in LIS research and education. Recommendations are put forward for institutional, professional and government stakeholders interested in re-positioning LIS research as a developmental resource for the national development.
