Transforming Library Education for Climate Resilience: From Knowledge to Action

Abstract

Abstract: As the current global climate crisis has been growing with a faster rate, a transformation in the approach is required from every segment of society including library and information science (LIS) education. LIS education is trending with the society changes on climate issues. This opinion research article calls for an overhaul of the curricula, pedagogies, and institutional climatic strategies of LIS schools information technologies resources, globally and especially in the Global South, to prepare emerging information professionals to be active climate-resilient agents. Based on recent empirical evidence collected (2019-2026), institutional reporting from organizations like ALA, UNESCO, and IFLA, and statistical data on climate vulnerability and the lack of countering education, it argues that library education still have to continue to be a resolution change agent in countering proactively climate conversation, a position that is not only academically indefensible but also professionally sustainable. It reviews the current landscape of climate literacy in LIS programmes, presents a critical argument for curricular transformation based on information literacy in the context of the environment, green librarianship and climate action in the communities, and provides a blueprint to shift from passive knowledge impartation to proactive, justice-oriented climate action. The final section outlines specific recommendations for action for LIS schools, professional associations and accreditation bodies.
